'English Tutorials' was founded in 1983 and organised its first summer course in July 1984. This course was repeated in 1985 and in 1986 courses were arranged throughout the summer months. In 1987 Christopher Smith decided to open 'English Tutorials' continuously  throughout the year. 'Small is beautiful' has been and remains the motto of English Tutorials since its inception. Its philosophy has remained unchanged since then:  The smaller the group,  the faster its members progress. 

English Tutorials offers courses for businessmen, professionals, academics, students and tourists - for whom time is at a premium and who are interested in either an intensive course of a few days or a more leisurely programme combining study and tourism.

All levels of English knowledge are welcome, from BEGINNER to ADVANCED.   
Courses range from 1 - 12 weeks, starting every Monday throughout the year. 

Class sizes contain 1 - 3 participants. Individual lessons are offered and can be combined with class tuition. Courses in General English and English for Special Purposes (Business & Commercial, Science & Technology, Legal & Medical, Revision for Beginners) are also offered.  Intensive courses are recognised by the German Education Authorities throughout the country.

Lessons are held in the elegant area of Morningside, about 15 minutes by bus from Princes Street. They are held in private homes built at the beginning of the century.  This setting is particularly popular with students, since it makes for an informal and relaxed atmosphere as well as a very personalised service appreciated especially by adults.

Quality shops and restaurants, cafés and pubs are 10 minutes on foot.  Parking is free outside the school..  Hotels, guesthouse and family accommodation are within walking distance.

Our team:
Founders: Christopher Smith BA (Oxon.) Cert Ed, Dip Ed, Cert French Lang and Brigitte Psaila  Lic-ès-Lettres opened English Tutorials for its first course in July 1984. In 1987 they decided to open English Tutorials continuously. The regular teaching team comprises Peter Bain, MA, who specialises in literature and Scottish Studies, Irene Dunlop, MA, Cert Ed, RSA Diploma TEFL. She specialises in individual tuition, English tuition for complete beginners and English for Special Purposes.  English for Science and Technology is taught by Neville Kale, BA, PhD, RSA Certificate TEFL and English for Business and Commerce is taught by John Tombes, MA, RSA Certificate TEFL, who has wide teaching and professional experience.
